CLAYSS was an active part of the Talloires Network Leaders Conference

From 30th September to 3rd October, the Talloires Network Leaders Conference (TNLC2021) was celebrated, jointly hosted on the virtual campuses of Tufts University's Tisch College of Civic Life and the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School. CLAYSS actively participated in this important global gathering of higher education leaders and students from all regions worldwide.

On Thursday, 30th September, María Rosa Tapia (CLAYSS, Uniservitate) moderated the panel "Service-Learning Before, During and After the Covid-19 Pandemic." This dialogue, hosted by CLAYSS, had the participation of Bojana Ćulum Ilić (University of Rijeka, UNIRi, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Education, Croatia); Matthew Pink (the National Manager / Research Fellow, ACU Engagement, Australian Catholic University); María Catalina Nosiglia (Secretary of the Academic Affairs Department, professor and researcher of Educational Policies of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina).

On Friday, 1st October, the former Secretary of State and the current US Special Presidential Envoy on Climate, John F. Kerry, addressed the issue of climate change and the responsibility of universities as agents of change and response to the climate emergency. He highlighted the central role of young people as crucial actors in this process, understanding that it is key "to convince people of the urgency that needs to be applied to climate change", as well as "responsibility for the university not just to teach its student body, but to be responsible for teaching the community."
After Kerry's keynote address, Prof. Saleemul Huq (the Director of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development, Bangladesh), Emily Shuckburgh (Director of Cambridge Zero, University of Cambridge) and Prof. Nieves Tapia (Founder and Director of CLAYSS) commented on his presentation and debated the crucial role of educational institutions and youth in this much-needed change.

On Saturday, 2nd October, the panel session on "Strengthening Regional Networks as a Strategy for Empowerment and Movement Building" had almost 200 participants from different countries and regions, including the first director of the Talloires Network, Robert Hollister. Luz Avruj (Institutional Relations and Networks Coordinator of CLAYSS) spoke with Manuel Caire (founder of the Chilean Service-Learning Network, REASE, and representative of the Ibero-American Service-Learning Network, REDIBAS), Carol Ma (representative of the Service-Learning Asian Network) and Alzbeta Brozmanová Gregorová (from the European Association of Service-Learning in Higher Education and the Central and Eastern European Service-Learning Network). Each regional leader explained how their regional networks were created, highlighting the strengths and challenges of networking. They effectively tackled the issue regarding how daunting it can be to set out and reach agreements, but they all agreed that despite the difficulties, it is worth developing and sustaining them.
